Huggett secures dream move

25 January 2012

We recently caught with Luke Huggett, who P4S placed at Cloud County Community College in 2010. Following a hugely successful 18 months at the Junior College he has now committed to The College of Charleston (NCAA DI) to continue his education and college soccer playing career. Luke was kind enough to answer a few questions to give us his thoughts on the P4S process and his time in the US so far.

Who were you playing for in the UK prior to heading to the US, and how did you secure your scholarship to Cloud County?

I was just playing for a local team with my friends called Wick F.C. Previously I had played for the England Colleges National Team and also been on the Center of Excellence books of Brighton and Hove Albion F.C. I secured my scholarship with the help of Barry and Dan at P4S.

You attended the US Team Tour in Charlotte during 2010. What did you feel you gained from this?

Following the Tour I knew exactly what I needed to improve upon to make myself a top player in the US system. It also gave me an eye opener into the US College style of play.

What have been your highest accomplishments so far as a Student-Athlete?

My highest accomplishment has been captaining Cloud County to the National Championship. It was made extra special by the fact that we were written off by some but came out on top. I was also named a NJCAA 2nd Team All-American and was named in the National Tournament All Star XI which was great. I am also proud of scoring 49 goals in 2 seasons.

How did you secure your transfer to The College of Charleston?

My goal scoring record caught the eye and also my maturity, hard work and leadership while playing for a top NJCAA College.

What would you say are the major benefits of attending a Junior College instead of going straight into a 4 year University?

I had, had time out of education in England and always struggled a little in the classroom! JC give me the chance to get to grips with studying and bring my grades up so I was ready for a University. The level of soccer in JC is also very high so it prepares you athletically for the next step.

What are your plans for when you graduate from The College of Charleston?

My plans are to continue my soccer career, however if this does not work out then I will either follow my major or go down the coaching path. I would love to still be involved in football.
