From Teeside to Texas!
At Pass4Soccer we are constantly in contact with succesful graduates, and it was great to catch Ben Everson recently to ask him a few questions about his time in the USA, playing socccer and studying at a University.
Just talk us through who you were playing for in the UK prior to heading to the US and how you secured a scholarship
Before coming to the US I was playing for Guisbrough Town F.C and attending the University of Teeside. One of my close friends was attending a University in the USA having been placed by Pass4Soccer and through him I became very interested in transferring my studies overseas. He recommended PS4 so I got on the phone to Barry straight away and played in a Showcase in Newcastle. I received several offers but eventually decided upon West Texas A&M University.
What were you highest accompishments as a student-athlete in the US?
When I was selected as All-Region Player of the Year and was selected in the All-American team. Off the field it was gaining my degree.
How did you find living away from home?
I really enjoyed it! It was a totally different culture living in Texas compared to Middlesbrough but I loved every minute. Deciding to come to the US has been the best decision of my life.
Now that you have graduated what are your plans for the future?
Since graduating University I have had trials with Kansas City, San Jose Earthquakes (both MLS)and Minnesota Thunder (USL Pro). I also had a pro trial for Nez Ziona (Israel Premier Division). In the Fall of 2011 I started my graduate assistant role with UTPB where I am coaching the soccer team and competing my Masters in Kinesiology.
What are the major benefits of attending US University on a soccer scholarship?
Getting to experience a different culture is a great life experience. There is also a really good standard of competition and facilties at almost all US Universities. You also get to travel a lot with the soccer team and see so many different places. Getting a degree funded is also fantastic, so I would highly recommend this route to anyone that is serious about getting a degree and playing soccer to the highest level.
